Introduction to Child Therapy

Learn about creating an optimal child therapy setting, selecting art and play media, informational interviewing of parents or caregivers, basic developmental assessment, treatment planning, and treatment using a variety of creative arts including art, play, storytelling, movement, and drama.

A portion of the workshop will be devoted to the importance and the facilitation of the first session of therapy. This critical meeting is filled with opportunities to influence the course of treatment. Topics will include safety, confidentiality, reporting laws, and other issues that must be addressed in the beginning of treatment.

Additional topics presented will include addressing separation from parents for therapy, establishing rapport, limit setting, addressing problematic or unsafe behaviors, resistance, termination, and closure. Techniques will also be offered for responding to parent or caregiver questions about therapy progress.
